Clans

Clans are another part of the game of being Scottish that the Scots so much enjoy. The word clan originally meant ‘children’, meaning the descendants of a single person, and each clan claims descent from a single Adam-like ancestor. In the case of some clans, it is Adam himself. When a Macleod and a MacLean were disputing the age of their respective clans, Macleod said, “We never saw you on board Noah’s ark.” To which Maclean replied: “Who ever heard of a MacLean that didn’t have his own boat?”

“Each clan claims descent from a single ancestor. In the case of some clans, it is Adam himself.”
